Energy-Saving Research on PSA Nitrogen Generation Equipment

The component of a PSA nitrogen-generation system that consumes compressed air is the oxygen–nitrogen separation unit, which also constitutes the core of the system. This unit achieves continuous nitrogen production through the alternating, cyclical operation of two adsorption towers packed with an adsorbent (molecular sieve): while one tower is pressurized to adsorb oxygen and produce nitrogen, the other tower is depressurized and vented to desorb oxygen and regenerate the adsorbent (with a small purge of product nitrogen). Under normal operating conditions, the two towers switch every 60 seconds; each complete cycle—comprising one adsorption phase for oxygen removal and nitrogen production followed by one desorption/regeneration phase—represents one adsorption cycle. Through this alternating, cyclic operation, nitrogen is continuously produced.
When the load of PSA nitrogen-generation equipment changes, the resulting variation in energy consumption is far from ideal. However, in most users’ gas-demand processes, there are peak and off-peak periods for nitrogen use, and nitrogen consumption may even be intermittent.
However, during low-demand periods or intermittent nitrogen usage, the purity of the produced nitrogen increases while energy consumption decreases only marginally; in some specific gas-use processes, the increase in nitrogen purity can even hinder normal production, directly leading to energy waste and degraded product quality.
